Execute Your Plan

Once you have planned what, where, and how you work on your courses and learn, it’s time to put that plan into action. The following are some things that can help you...

Overcoming Procrastination

According to Elizabeth Lombard, Ph.D. in her article on Psychology Today (see the full article for more ideas), there are some things you can do help you minimize our human tendency to procrastinate:

  • Put the task in front of you in proper perspective (don’t catastrophize)
  • Consider how the task helps you achieve your purpose and goals - have a compelling why for completing the task
  • Set a time to do the work rather than getting to it “sometime”
  • Plan sufficient time to get the job done (people are notorious for underestimating how long things will take. Understanding this reality will allow you to plan better)
  • Break down a larger task into more manageable chunks. That makes assignments and homework a lot less overwhelming.
  • Set aside perfectionism. Get the task done and give yourself a little time to make it better (drafting and revising) rather than trying to get it perfect

Maintaining Your Focus & Attention

  • Find a more effective location to study to avoid distractions
  • Put away your cellphone when you study (or at least turn off your notifications). There are apps out there that can help with this
  • Break down tasks into more manageable chunks
  • Collect all the materials you need for your task (so you don’t have to stop working to get something)
  • Try the Pomodoro Technique (can also help with procrastination)
  • Remember your self-care techniques (this can help keep your body and mind sharp)
